This week, we added a new selection of vintage Japanese fabric scraps to our Etsy shop.
The latest additions include colorful Meisen silk, traditional silk kimono fabric, cotton textiles, and beautifully textured shibori pieces. Each fabric has its own character — from bold abstract patterns and expressive floral designs to quiet, subtle woven textures.
Many of these textiles date from the Showa era and were originally created for Japanese kimono and other traditional garments. Today, these vintage fabrics can be enjoyed in many new ways, including slow stitching, patchwork, quilting, textile collage, visible mending, bookbinding, fiber art, and other creative projects.
One of the highlights this week is vintage Meisen silk. Known for its distinctive blurred edges, bold colors, and surprisingly modern designs, Meisen textiles often have a graphic quality that still feels fresh today. We have also added more understated Japanese silk fabrics with deep tones, flowing patterns, and beautiful woven textures.
As always, most of our vintage Japanese textiles are one of a kind. Once a piece is sold, it is often impossible to find exactly the same fabric again.
We will continue adding new vintage Japanese fabrics and antique textiles regularly.

What is Tsumugi?
Hand-Spun Japanese Silk Fabric
Tsumugi is a traditional Japanese silk textile made from hand-spun silk yarn. Unlike modern smooth silk, tsumugi silk fabric contains natural slubs created during the hand-spinning process.
Because of this texture, tsumugi fabric has a soft yet structured feel. It was historically worn as everyday kimono, valued for durability and comfort rather than ornamentation.
Today, vintage tsumugi fabric is highly sought after for:
Sustainable fashion projects
Boro and patchwork art
Textile collecting
Handmade sewing and craft work
Its organic texture and subtle tones make it ideal for slow fashion and eco-conscious design.
Keywords naturally associated with tsumugi: Japanese silk fabric, vintage kimono fabric, handwoven silk, sustainable textile, traditional Japanese cloth.
What is Oshima Tsumugi?
Luxury Japanese Silk from Amami Oshima
Oshima Tsumugi is a refined silk textile originating from Amami Oshima in southern Japan. Known worldwide as one of the finest Japanese silk fabrics, it is distinguished by its precision and elegance.
Key characteristics include:
Extremely fine silk threads
Intricate kasuri (ikat) weaving technique
Traditional mud dyeing process
Lightweight yet durable structure
Unlike printed textiles, Oshima Tsumugi patterns are created through pre-dyed threads woven with extraordinary accuracy. The pattern appears on both sides of the fabric.
Collectors and designers value Oshima Tsumugi for its sophistication, durability, and heritage craftsmanship.
Common search terms: Oshima Tsumugi fabric, Japanese kasuri silk, mud-dyed silk textile, luxury kimono fabric, vintage Japanese silk.
